Ontario uses a Graduated Licensing System (GLS) to help new drivers gain the knowledge and experience needed to drive safely. To apply for a driver’s licence, you must be at least 16 years old and successfully complete each stage of the licensing process.
• Be accompanied by a fully licensed driver with at least four years of driving experience.
• Maintain a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of 0.00%.
• Do not drive between 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.
• Do not drive on 400-series highways or other high-speed highways unless accompanied by a qualified driving instructor.
• Ensure every passenger wears a working seat belt.
Students who successfully complete an MTO-approved Beginner Driver Education (BDE) course may become eligible to take the G2 road test after 8 months instead of the standard 12-month waiting period.
After successfully passing the G1 exit road test, you will receive your G2 licence. This stage allows you to drive independently while continuing to gain valuable driving experience before qualifying for a full Class G licence.

Drivers aged 19 and under are subject to passenger restrictions during late-night hours.
After holding a G2 licence for 12 months, you become eligible to take the G road test.
After passing the G2 exit road test, you will receive your full Class G driver’s licence. A full G licence allows you to drive on all Ontario roads and highways without the graduated licensing restrictions that apply to G1 and G2 drivers.
